The curriculum is everything that we intend children to learn. This has been carefully mapped out so that children experience a coherent, well-sequenced curriculum that builds on what they have been taught, know and can do.
It has been designed to equip children with the knowledge, attitudes and dispositions they need to acquire key skills and conceptual understanding in a range of subjects.
The school curriculum is split into three key stages and has been designed in a way that new learning always builds on what has already been taught. The three stages are Early Years (Reception), Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2) and Key Stage 2 ( Years 3,4,5 and 6)
Children are taught the knowledge they need to know through inquiry, discussion and carefully sequence activities and experiences planned by the class teacher. All the subjects we teach at this school are planned and delivered in a similar way to ensure that learning is cumulative and builds on what children have already been taught.
The school provides a broad, balanced, creative curriculum, which endeavours to extend the children's knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live. We aim to help children acquire increasing competence through the development of concepts, skills and attitudes and to enable them to develop their own self-confidence and relate happily to others.
The first years of school are the foundation of your child's education. In September 2014, an updated National Curriculum was introduced. The subjects of study are English, Maths, Science, Design & Technology, Computing, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art and Design, Music and Physical Education. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education became a statutory subject from 2020.
At this stage, many of these subjects are integrated and taught through themes or topics to ensure engaging, meaningful learning opportunities. Themes also include opportunities to learn outside of the classroom where possible, looking to use children's natural curiosity, encouraging them to think critically and develops a scientific approach to problem solving.
As part of their learning, children will make visits to other environments; museums, workplaces, theatres etc. Visitors to the school such as storytellers, artists, musicians etc. will share their expertise in a particular field with the children and all these direct experiences will help to make the children's learning stimulating and relevant.

We use an accredited Systematic Synthetic Phonics Programme to teach early reading. The programme we use at this school is Little Wandle (more information can be found in the 'Phonics and Reading' section of the website.
RE also forms an important part of our curriculum at St Andrew's, and more information can be found in the Religious Education section of the website.
Our Curricular Plans
We have adapted a consistent approach to curricular planning across the school to ensure all learning is cumulative and builds on prior learning. We have included a number of documents below so that you can see our curriculum and understand what children will learn as they progress through the school.
The following overviews provide a summary of the content taught across the year in each subject. At St Andrew's we have transitioned from a fully mixed school in 2025-2026 (5 classes) to a part mixed school in 2026-2027 (2 mixed classes and 4 stand-alone year groups). This has made us even stronger and reflecting, adjusting and improving our curriculum to ensure children get the best education possible and we are proud of how our academic results showcase this over the last 2 academic years.
Reception Curriculum
At St Andrew’s CofE Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves a strong, nurturing start to their educational journey. Our ambitious and carefully-sequenced Reception curriculum is rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and designed to cultivate curious minds, confident communicators, and resilient learners through purposeful play, rich conversation, and high-quality teaching. Underpinned by the 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage, our early years provision seamlessly blends evidence-based early language toolkits (Rhyme of the Week, Wordless Books, and Story Sacks) with accredited Montessori mathematics (Pink Tower) and immersive Forest School outdoor learning. Led by EYFS Lead Kelly Shirt and our experienced early years team, we value each child's unique starting point and build a safe, inspiring environment where every child feels valued, confident, and excited to learn
Key Stage One and Key Stage Two Curriculum
At St Andrew’s CofE Primary Academy, our 2026–2027 Curriculum Overview outlines an ambitious, progressive, and carefully-sequenced learning journey designed to ensure every child gains the rich knowledge, vocabulary, and skills needed to flourish.
Tailored to meet the unique needs of our mixed-age and single-year classes, our curriculum weaves together high-quality, research-informed schemes—including Developing Experts (Science, History, and Geography), White Rose Maths, NATRE (Religious Education), Kapow (Computing, Design & Technology, Music, and RSE/PSHE), and Get Set for PE—with meaningful enquiry questions that spark curiosity and active engagement. Through structured Knowledge Organisers, daily 'flashbacks', and WalkThrus questioning strategies, we systematically build long-term memory, nurture subject-specific expertise, and empower every pupil to achieve their very best.
