Maths Lead - Rebecca Hanks
Rebecca is the Maths Lead at St Andrew's and is a meticulous, reflective and highly knowledgeable leader who is committed to ensuring that every child develops the confidence and mathematical understanding they need to succeed. Despite the school performing strongly in mathematics across all year groups, Rebecca never becomes complacent. She carefully analyses assessment information and pupil outcomes, continually identifying opportunities to further develop and improve the teaching and learning of mathematics across the school.
Rebecca leads by example, ensuring that she has a secure understanding of individual children's starting points, needs and potential barriers to learning. Using White Rose Mathematics as a guiding framework, she works closely with teachers to ensure that lessons are thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of individual classes, groups and pupils. Her attention to detail and high expectations ensure that children are appropriately supported whilst also being challenged to deepen their mathematical thinking and understanding.
As with her leadership of RE, Rebecca is proactive in keeping her subject knowledge and understanding of current guidance up-to-date, ensuring that this is shared effectively with the wider staff team. She provides valuable opportunities for colleagues to develop their own practice and reflects carefully on how professional development can translate into improved outcomes for pupils. This academic year, Rebecca has also secured a place with our local Maths Hub to introduce Mastering Number across EYFS and Key Stage 1, demonstrating her commitment to continually strengthening the foundations of mathematical learning. Her ambition, precision and dedication make her an invaluable leader who consistently seeks to ensure that every child at St Andrew's receives the very best mathematical education possible.
Mathematics at St Andrew's
At St Andrew’s CofE Primary Academy, we empower every child to become a confident, resilient, and fluent mathematician. Our progressive mastery curriculum weaves together accredited Montessori Pink Tower concrete sensory materials in Reception and Year 1. From September 2026 we are proud to be beginning our journey with the Venn Maths Hub using the NCETM Mastering Number programme, laying rich early foundations in spatial reasoning, subitising, and automatic number-fact recall.
From Year 1 to Year 6, children follow our White Rose Maths Blueprint, utilizing a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach that ensures mathematical concepts are deeply understood before moving to abstract problem solving. Supported by WalkThrus interactive check-ins (Show Me Boards and hinge questions) and targeted Number Stacks practical interventions, our evidence-informed approach aims for every child to keep up, achieving strong success—including 89% Expected in Key Stage 2 Maths (+14% above national) and our Year 4 Multiplication Check score (53%).
